Choosing The Perfect Counsel

Three Ways You Can Maximize Your Personal Injury Settlement

The effects of an injury can be far-reaching, affecting your life for years after the initial incident. It only makes sense to take the following steps to maximize the amount that you receive from your personal injury settlement.

1. See a Doctor Immediately After You Are Injured

After an injury, your first instinct may be to see if it gets better on its own. Trying to tough out an injury can be a costly mistake. Not only does it delay your medical care, but it also tells the insurance companies that you don't really need treatment for your injury.

When you seek medical attention, don't be afraid to see a specialist if your injury is complex or difficult to diagnose. Specialists have the training to thoroughly document your injury; such documentation helps you argue your case and get the settlement you need.

For example, many individuals have to go to the ER because they don't know how severe their injuries are. Though the ER can provide a certain level of care, it usually will not order the tests that you need to diagnose certain conditions. Instead, visit a specialist who knows what tests can sufficiently demonstrate the extent of your injuries.

2. Lock Down Your Social Media

Make sure that all of your social media accounts are set to private. It is also advisable to look at your friends and followers and make sure they are individuals you can trust. When in doubt, avoid posting about your accident on social media.

Insurance companies may try to use your social media posts as proof that you are overplaying your injury, taking your words out of context or even twisting them completely to fit their arguments.

For example, if you had one good day where your pain was minimal and you were able to accomplish a lot on your to-do list, insurance companies may try to use the post as proof that you are healing, when in reality, the good days are few and far between.

3. Maintain Constant Treatment for Your Injury

When life gets busy, it can be tempting to let appointments fall by the wayside. However, this can decrease your settlement. A lapse in treatment says to the insurance companies that you are not as injured as you say you are. It also hampers the healing process.

As you seek treatment, make sure to follow your doctor's recommendations concerning visits to specialists, physical therapists, and other professionals. You want the insurance company to see that you are doing everything in your power to try to help your body get better. Find out more here about how to help your personal injury case.
